Myself and
Luke have had our eircom experiences in the past. I have a feeling I am about to have another one of these experiences. I want a phone line. The only way to get a phone line is from eircom. They have control of all the switches in ireland. Yes, I can then go to another provider and be free from eircom, but eircom must supply the line first. I filled out a form online 2 weeks ago. I recieved no confirmation of reciept of that form.
I recieved a call today from eircom, they have no record of a phone line in the apartment. I can see a phone line in the apartment. I can also see an EIRCOM ISDN box in the apartment hooked up. How can they install a phoneline and ISDN in a location and have no record of that. Anyway, because of this, they will set a charge of €121 to install the phoneline, but if it is already live (which it is), they will remove that charge. Grand so cheify, all good so far. I'm thinking I'll be up and running by next week an most.
Then I recieved a nice long mail saying blah blah, thanks for signing up....your account number for future calls....(oh there will be many i'm sure).
Tucked nicely away in the middle of the message:-
An eircom technician will be in contact with you to arrange an appointment for the installation of your line. Due to recent demand we are experiencing lead-times of up to 4 weeks in connecting some phone lines, but we are working as fast as possible to connect all customers.
WTF????
4 Fuckin Weeks! No wonder there is such a slow take up of broadband. Eircom must be just 1 guy in a van or something. 4 weeks. I'm in shock. This upsets me 2 fold.
Firstly. I dont want eircom at all, as soon as I'm connected and get broadband enabled (which takes another 10 days, and might not work I might add) I am switching to Esat BT who have better service, quicker service and a cheaper service.
Secondly, I have gone through this before only to find out that my phone line was not broadband capable. The nice (but dim) lady on the phone said, "It doesn't come up why, but you might be more that 4 km from an Eircom switch. In Dublin. My Hole! I was told this while looking out my front door at what? That's right, massive mother fucker of an EIRCOM SWITCH!!!
Fact: Connecting with Eircom is the most stressful procedure I have ever had to encounter. Why, because you can never be sure, what's next. Never.
I will keep you posted on progress.
