Kerry vs. Bush Mossy

Wednesday, June 30, 2004 comments 0 comments links to this post

I'm not a person who is big into politics. I wish I were. Was reading an article on Wired and when I came to the end, I found an interesting analogy to put here.
And for those who evaluate a candidate's choice of operating systems when choosing their president, Smith's check showed that the Kerry site is housed on an Apache Web server running on a Red Hat Linux box. The Bush website is hosted on a Microsoft IIS 5.0 server and uses Microsoft's ASP.net.
Let us think about this. Kerry uses apache on Linux. Two Open Source, free software packages that are strong and powerful yet graceful and forgiving. Bush uses IIS 5.0 on a Microsoft Box. Two packages built by a company that seems to be bent on world domination and never works the way it says it will.

Im not saying anything. I'll let you come to your own conclusions.

37Signals & The Future Of Duckarto Mossy

A Really thoughtful review of a seminar in Chicago by the guys at 37Signals, on Gadgetopia.

I won't go into the detail of the review, but if I had the money and wasn't living around 10,000 miles around the world, I would have gone to this.

The company is 4 guys, and I'd say they make a load of money off they're main sofware package, BaseCamp. Their office sounds cool.

OK. Duckarto wants to be like this. Right, at the moment we have no clients, and no office, and no money and no business. We are only out of college and we (the co-founders) are in full-time jobs at the moment, but we need a rest before trying to start up a fully-fledged business. But we will. Definatly. There are too many reasons to do it than not. We will be ahead of the rest in the Irish Market, and if we stay young and passionate about the goals of our business and our software, there is no stopping us.

I didn't realise some of these were even close to conception. Some of the advances in the last year amaze me. THe skin and lips ones are just freaky.

The Future is now!!

NSFW (Not Safe For Work) Mossy

The Fark. This site is cool. It is kind of a portal to funny news and occasionally some Hot Ladies.
In the meantime, Drew had somehow gotten into the habit of sending odd news to friends of his in England, where he lived for a year while in college. He started sending emails with the funny news stories to his friends via email. However, emails were going out several times a day, and Drew started to suspect that they might be annoying. Remembering he owned the Fark.com domain name, he started a website and told all his friends to go there for the weird news. That was February 12, 1999.

Shoe Of The Week - Issue 1 Mossy

Monday, June 28, 2004 comments 0 comments links to this post

Designed and endorsed by the eS skate team the contract is very unique shoe. Each shoe has a different eS pro rider portrait screen printed on the tongue. You never know which rider you will get until you open the box. Features that make this a great skate shoe are: Soft action leather or suede upper, Perforated tongue for breath ability, Double padded tongue and collar, Elastic tongue centering straps, Full lenghth EVA midsole with cut-outs, Injected TPU heel counter, 400 NBS stitched gum rubber outsole. Site >>
This is the coolest shoe ever. I want it. I want it now! But living in Ireland is not faring well in the purchase of said shoe. I can only find one shop online that sells this particular one, but they don't deliver outside the US of course. If anyone sees this shoe, in Irish shops or even on a European website, let me know.

A really funny eBay sale, although not really funny because the lucky bastard got $4,000 for his ex-wifes wedding dress.
Only worn twice: Once at the wedding and once for these pictures.

The Payment Mossy

For my FYP in college, I developed a complete CMS for the ULSU. Everytime I told somebody, they would ask, "Did you get any money for it?". I would say, "No, maybe they'll give me a free hoodie or something...". That was not the case. I got 3 free pints. And a list of things to do written on the back of a reciept. I dunno, somehow I think I got severely rode.

You do the Math:

3 Months Work + Really Nice Result = 3 Pints + A Reciept

Now, I'm not great at Maths, but something doesn't quite add up. Maybe I should have gotten Paddy Healy to take a look at this? Am I missing a constant somehere? Maybe if I calculate Big-Oh from this equation, then apply some sort of algorithm, it will add up.

Joke of the Week - Issue 1 Mossy

THE GRIEVANCE

I, the Penis, hereby request a raise in salary for the following reasons:
  • I do physical labor.

  • I work at great depths.

  • I plunge head first into everything I do.

  • I do not get weekends or public holidays off.

  • I work in a damp environment.

  • I work in a dark workplace that has poor ventilation.

  • I work in high temperatures.

  • My work exposes me to contagious diseases.

MANAGEMENT'S RESPONSE

Dear Penis,

After assessing your request, and considering the arguments you have raised, the administration rejects your request for the following reasons:
  • You do not work 8 hours straight.

  • You fall asleep after brief work periods.

  • You do not always follow the orders of the management team.

  • You do not stay in your designated area and are often seen visiting other locations.

  • You do not take initiative - you need to be pressured and stimulated in order to start working.

  • You leave the workplace rather messy at the end of your shift.

  • You don't always observe necessary safety regulations, such as wearing the correct protective clothing.

  • You will retire well before you are 65.

  • You are unable to work double shifts.

  • You sometimes leave your designated work area before you have completed the assigned task.

And if that were not all, you have been seen constantly entering and exiting the workplace carrying two suspicious-looking bags.

Sincerely,

Management

White Ninja Comics. This Comic Site is excellent. Not overly intelligent, but brilliant for its simplicity. Just funny stupid short cartoons.

First Day at Work Mossy

Tuesday, June 08, 2004 comments 0 comments links to this post

Work is cool. I already have a million projects lined up. I'll be busy for about 2 years at this stage I'd say. Loads of little integration things with existing apps. Also, an implementation of CMS on the existing website looks in order. But that will be after all little internal jobs. Basically, a load of experience in a load of Development environments and System Admin experience with a load of large systems for CRM and Recruitment things.

But I still need to design tomasbreen.com, and put some more functionality into ULSU, and work on promoting TourWeb and Duckarto. And possibly some new work for SEG over the summer. They really need a redesign and a CMS.

A busy few months ly ahead of Mossy I tell ya. Yes Yes, Yes Yes.
